The BB Session runs from 1 January to 31 December.

In the BB, the age of Boys and Girls are the age in years they attain at the start of a BB Session.  This is called their BB age.  For many Boys and Girls, their BB age when they enter the Secondary school (Transition / Removed / Form 1 / Grade 7) is 11 years.  The typical BB age for Primary 1 / Standard 1 / Grade 1 is 5 years.

There are four Sections (types of programmes) in the BB in Malaysia, each catering to different interests.  Mostly this is grouped by age, but the Primer Section programme is targeted at older teenagers who are unable to spend the amount of time the Senior Section requires from its members.

  1. The Pre-Junior Section (Pre-Jnr); consisting of Boys & Girls from 6 - 8 years old , inclusive.
  2. The Junior Section (Jnr); consisting of Boys & Girls from 9 - 11 years old, inclusive.
  3. The Senior Section (Seniors); consisting of Boys & Girls from 12 - 19 years old, inclusive.
  4. The Primer Section (Primers); consisting of Boys & Girls from 15 - 19 years old, inclusive.

The equivalents in BB UK are:

  1. Pre-Jnr - Anchors
  2. Jnr - also called Juniors
  3. Seniors - Company and Seniors (15 - 18 years)
  4. Primers - Amicus (15 - 22 years)
