Target Award

The Target Award aims to impart basic knowledge every Boy or Girl needs for life in the BB.

This Award is the First Award every Boy or Girl needs to pass in the Senior Section.

The only Rank allowed for a Senior Section Boy or Girl without the Target Award is Recruit.

Senior Section Boys and Girls are not allowed to wear any Awards without the Target Award.  Boys & Girls are not allowed to attend any other Award Classes before fully completing the requirements of the Target Award.

The requirements of Target Award are:

  • Regular attendance for 1 year, with 100% attendance during Target Award class.
  • Satisfactory completion of course of instruction.
  • Passed a written test.

The contents of the course include:

  1. BB Knowledge
  2. Citizenship

  3. Elementary Christian Education
  4. Simple Outdoor Skills
    • Packing for an Overnight Camp
    • Cooking a Simple Meal
    • Simple Rope Knots (reef knot, figure-of-eight, clove hitch, round turn & 2 half hitches, double sheet bend, timber hitch, buntline hitch, bowline, cleat hitch -- see gallery)
    • Basic Physical Ability

  5. Health, Safety & Basic Emergencies
    • Personal Cleanliness & Health
    • Emergency Services
    • Highway Code
    • Simple First Aid

  6. Elementary Drill for Recruits (Chapters 4 & 6 in TDM)

The written test covers only Item 1 from the course.  Practical tests cover the remainder of the Items from the course.

Boys & Girls working on the Target Award are expected to undertake a suitable outdoor activity during the course, e.g., Recruit Camp (aka Boot Camp).

Target Award classes are conducted over the First Quarter of the Session.
